Types of hair porosity

Low porosity hair

Low porosity hair is the best example of healthy hair. It is in its best condition, it has a tight structure (the cuticles stick tightly to each other) which makes them smooth and bouncy. Low porosity hair rarely gets frizzy in response to moisture or static, however, it may tend to become greasy.

How to recognize low porosity hair?

  • it is strong, smooth, shiny
  • it tends to be easily weighed down
  • it is resistant to mechanical damage
  • it dries for a long time - over 3 hours
  • it is resistant to styling and quickly returns to its natural shape
  • it does not get frizzy
  • it is easy to comb

How to take care of low porosity hair?

  • use highly cleansing shampoos without too many emollients
  • choose conditioners and masks with little or no humectants
  • remember that your hair does not like an excess of styling products
  • perform hair oiling treatments 1-2 times a week using an appropriately selected mixture of oils (see link to find out what oils your hair likes best, below).

Medium porosity hair

What characterizes this hair type is that the hair cuticle that is raised, instead of being flat. The overall condition of medium porosity hair is usually assessed as good or very good/ slightly deviating from the ideal. This is the most common type of hair. It gets damaged often, especially at the ends, tends to frizz and curl, however it is not as weak or dry as high porosity hair.

How to recognize medium porosity hair?

  • it may be slightly wavy
  • it tends to become frizzy
  • it is amenable to styling, therefore the styling effect do not last for a long time

High porosity hair

The scales of the hair stick out from the hair shaft, which begins to resemble an open cone. High porosity hair is often curly or is damaged by dyeing or excessive styling (straightener, curling iron). Such hair requires special care, and it should be protected against further damage. One way to do so is to maintain a proper level of hydration and lubrication.

How can we recognize high porosity hair?

  • they are damaged, often bleached, curly
  • they dry quickly
  • they absorb large amounts of care products - masks / conditioners / oils
  • they are very susceptible to mechanical damage
  • they get tangled easily and are difficult to untangle
  • they lack the ‘natural glow’

How to take care of your hair in the best way possible?

  • focus on gentle cleansing – use a gently cleansing shampoo / OMO method {follow the link to OMO method and more - check what it is about!} / Cup method {follow the link to the guide about proper hair care}.
  • your hair loves regular oiling - like no other! It is best to wash your hair 1 to 2 times a week. Do not forget about regenerating hair masks!
  • remember to protect your hair against mechanical damage and split ends
  • minimize styling treatments using high temperatures
  • brush your hair gently, avoid brushing your hair while it is still wet
  • sleep with your hair down or loosely tied, to prevent your hair from rubbing against the pillow
